Wales Offers Best Value Holidays in the UK
Recently an article in the Swansea Evening Post quoted a survey which concluded that Wales including the Gower Peninsular offer the best value holidays in the UK.
Researchers looked at the cost of 5 typical family activities in a number of areas of the UK and totted up the overall cost of the outlay, and Wales and the Gower was the only region where the total bill came to under a £100. They found that a family would spend only £94.01 compared to £242.86 in the South East. Closest to Wales was Scotland at £120.95.
The activities included a visit to a theme park, a day at the beach, a trip to a stately home, a trip to a museum, and a fun trip to a zoo.
The same applies to Golf course green fees. Pennard Golf Club a cliff top links course above the famous Three Cliffs Bay ranked number 4 in Wales has a green fee of only £50 on weekdays with the equivalent course in Ireland or Scotland costing at least double, that is if you can get on the course in the first place.
It is not only in activities that Wales scores well. My survey of price comparisons for self catering holiday accommodation reflects the same results. My cottage in Port Eynon at the most southerly point of the Gower is 5* quality, has three bedrooms (a master with ensuite and super king size bed, a double and a twin), private patio and garden, allows pets at no extra charge, and is within 100 metres of the beach, and rents for £925 per week in the high season. Comparable cottages in Cornwall range from £1100 to £1600, in the Cotswolds from £1300 to £1600, and Scotland from £1000 to £1300.
In recent years the Gower Peninsular has emerged as a popular holiday destination within the UK and is often referred to as Wales’ hidden gem. UK holiday makers are abandoning the expensive and over crowded traditional destinations in Devon and Cornwall in favour of the beautiful and largely unspoilt Gower peninsular. Although only 8 miles wide and 13 miles long the Gower was the first designated “area of outstanding natural beauty” in the UK with several unique species of fauna and flora, unusual geology, and beautiful sandy beaches. Most famous of all is Rhossili beach, voted #1 in the UK,#3 in Europe and in the top ten in the world on Trip Advisor. Rhossili sunsets rival those of the Florida Keys for their beauty and intensity. Not far behind Rhossili is the beautiful Three Cliffs Bay, reputedly Katherine Jenkins favourite place in the world.
In addition to the natural features of the Gower Peninsular there are a host of outdoor and sporting activities to entertain the visitor. These include aerial sports from hang gliding to sky diving, surfing, canoeing and wind surfing, pony trekking, boat trips to see dolphins seals and a wide variety of marine life, walks around the entire Gower coastline, rock climbing, and for those odd days when the weather is not so good the LC2 leisure centre and water park provides fun for children of all ages. There are museums and sites of historical interest, and of course 2015 is the centenary of the birth of Swansea’s most famous son, Dylan Thomas with a variety of events to celebrate his life and works.
The Gower not only offers the best value holidays in the UK it also offers a rich blend of fauna and flora, unique natural landscape and a wide variety of historical and cultural interests which are entirely free.
Come and see for yourself, whether for a short break in the autumn or spring or a week in the summer I guarantee when you have visited once you will want to return time after time, as many of my guests already do.
