My latest blog features Pennard Golf Club, one of the top courses in Wales. Many of our guests play golf and yet don’t bring their clubs on holiday. What a shame to miss out on playing such a spectacular course.
Even if you don’t bring your clubs a warm welcome waits for all visitors who want to enjoy a drink or a meal in the comfortable club house enjoying the stunning views. to Three Cliffs bay.
Pennard Golf Club is a unique cliff top links laid out over challenging terrain and offering outstanding views in every direction. Golf has been played at Pennard Burrows for 120 years, but the course as it largely is now was laid out by the greatest of early designers, James Braid. Today the greatest golf designer of modern times, Tom Doak, is advising the Club on further sympathetic development of the course, and particularly bunker redevelopment.
Pennard Golf Course is rated 2nd in South Wales, 4th in Wales and 74th in the UK by top100golf courses.co.uk and 6th best value by National Club Golfer in the UK of the top 100 golf courses for under £100. The reputation of Pennard Golf Club is increasing around the world as visitors delight in the quality and challenge of the course and the magnificent setting.
The Club”s aim is to offer the best combination of Golf Course and Club facilities in Wales. It is already best value in Wales, which is a platform that will be used for further improvement. The strategy is to invest in the golf course to make it the best it can be in terms of condition of fairways, quality of greens and consistency of bunkers. To implement this strategy the Club appointed Huw Morgan, a Master Green Keeper, and one of only 60 in the world, as Course and Club Manager. The clue is in his job title, where the course comes first. A bunker refurbishment programme using the latest materials is already 50% completed and will ensure bunker faces are always in good condition requiring little disruptive maintenance, and the bases are firm with consistent depth of sand. £200,000 has been invested in a rolling equipment replacement programme to ensure the green staff have the best machinery to work with on fairways, tees and greens.
A four hole academy course will be constructed over the next year for Juniors, beginners and improvers to use to improve their game. Minor adjustments to the course layout will be made to enhance safety and improve the pace of play. Ultimately the already adequate practice facilities will be upgraded and extended.
In February a state of the art Golf studio and teaching facility was completed. This represents a joint investment of £60,000 shared by the Club and PGA Head Professional, Sean Pearson. Sean was appointed in January 2015, having been assistant to long time servant of PGC Mike Bennett who recently retired after 40 years as Head Professional. Sean has recently appointed Llewellyn Millar as his PGA Assistant Professional to add to his existing team responsible for providing a first class service to members and visitors, running his well stocked shop, teaching, and operating the new golf studio. Pennard Golf Club and Sean are also fortunate to call upon the experience and expertise of PGA Golf Professional Nicola Stroud who teaches, runs clinics, and organises special events at Pennard particularly focussed on Ladies, Juniors and newtogolf beginners. The PGA Professional teaching team at Pennard can offer a full range of teaching and coaching across all ages and abilities of golfer, including those with disabilities. Juniors are the life blood of golf and the teaching team at Pennard have developed a progressive scheme to take 6 year old beginners through to single handicap golf, and for those with the talent further into County and Welsh representation.
Beyond the golf course the club offers an enthusiastic welcome to the restaurant and bar facilities of the Club House, which are open to all. By evening The Pobbles Restaurant offers fine dining using only freshly cooked ingredients at reasonable prices and an extensive snack menu by day. The Club is open for breakfast from 8.30 am all year round. The Club has recently invested £20000 in upgrading the catering facilities and extended opening times so Members and Guests can enjoy quality catering whenever they choose. The most recent initiative is to establish a Dining Club, which is particularly aimed at the local village communities, and allows visitors to enjoy the facilities of the Club without paying a membership fee. There can be few pleasures in the world to beat sipping a refreshing drink seated on the club house balcony looking down the valley to Three Cliffs and the sea beyond.
The Club House facilities are also available for weddings, wakes and anniversary parties. Just imagine the backdrop of Pennard Castle and Three Cliffs Bay for your wedding photos and memories for years to come. The dining room can seat 80 for weddings and formal events, and up to 100 for buffets.
Pennard Golf Links is a wonderful course in a beautiful setting. The course development programme together with significant investment in course and Club House facilities will ensure that Pennard Golf Club continues to rated amongst the best in Wales and bears comparison with the famous , and greatly more expensive, links courses of Scotland and Ireland.
Pennard Golf Club offers great value for money to Members and Visitors alike. Membership is open to new members in all categories. Pennard is a Club where the Members come first and welcomes applications from individuals who will appreciate a 365 day a year golf course in first class condition. You will not find ridiculous offers designed to attract new members simply for their monetary subscription but we do have a number of incentives for those taking up or returning to the game and to those experienced golfers who want to rise to the challenge of Pennard’s magnificent golf course.
As one overseas visitor recently wrote in the Visitors’ Book “Played golf around the world for over 25 years. Today the best experience so far. Staggering views and amazing course and conditions. A truly unique golf experience”
